For those looking to avoid shoulder issues by maintaining strength and conditioning, following is a video by former Navy SEAL, Stew Smith.
Smith is certified by the National Strength and Conditioning Association as a Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) and has even appeared on National Geographic’s “Fight Science.” I got a kick out his referring to physical therapist as “the true sadists in this industry” since he speaks from the patient perspective. It’s all good pain with PT’s.

This is his LWSW – Light Weight Shoulder Workout. It should be understood that this video is for educational purposes, so check with your medical professional before trying the exercise…

Proper Nutrition, Physical Therapy and Your Treatment

Has a physical therapist (not a chiropractor with “PT” on their door) ever counseled you on the importance of nutrition to your treatment?

Of course, I’m sure you’ve been told to drink lots of water after an initial evaluation, but that is not what I’m talking about. Aside from the obvious impact that being overweight has on your body – foot, knee and back problems are all exacerbated by excess weight, not to mention the beating your heart takes – your diet can provide the fuel your body needs to heal itself and stay healthy.
One of the hallmarks of physical therapy is that certain treatment methods actually get your body heal itself (I write this post from the perspective of a patient, not a PT) for example:

Ultrasound increases circulation, enabling your blood to carry away toxins and reduce inflammation;
Electrical stimulation – circulation;
Therapeutic massage – circulation… again;
Muscle energy – using muscle contractions to manipulate joints/structures;
And many more.

The list goes on but the missing link, usually, is nutrition.
Think about it – if you nourish your cells with quality foods, doesn’t it make sense that it will help your body better help itself?
The opposite is true as well – feed your body high-calorie, additive-packed, junk, and your results stand a good chance of being compromised. Physical therapists routinely see patients who have more difficulty with treatment because of weight issues, and nutrition plays a significant role in this.

Change Your Diet, Change Your Life

In our home, we eat mostly organic and whole foods, some of which we have delivered to our home after ordering online. One of our children has been diagnosed as being on the autism spectrum and he’s acutely sensitive to additives and refined sugars.
Since it was impossible to give him a special diet and not have him be tempted to enjoy what the rest of the family has, we changed everyone’s diet.
At first it was a challenge and I was the most resistant, but then we noticed everyone’s energy level and overall health improving.

Physical Therapy For Frozen Shoulder/Adhesive Capsulitis In Bowie, Crofton, Annapolis, Maryland

There are two principal characteristics of the frozen shoulder: pain and contracture.
Generally, shoulder pain associated with a frozen shoulder (sometimes called FS) is progressive and is usually initially felt at night or when your should is moved near the end of its ROM (range of motion).

A short guide to determining your need for physical therapy

Unless you have a prescription for physical therapy, you may wonder if you are a candidate, or if physical therapy can help your ailment. For physical therapists, however, this is an easy question to answer: Most people can benefit from physical therapy, whether their condition varies from a simple ankle sprain to a complex neurological disorder.

Physical therapy is a conservative treatment method addressing the management, healing, and prevention of injuries and disabilities. Physical therapy uses non-invasive tools to help improve total body function, improving quality of life. Physical therapists focus on relieving pain, promoting healing, restoring function and movement, and facilitation and adaptation associated with injury.
Therapy also focuses on ergonomics or body mechanic training, fitness, and wellness. So, as you can see, physical therapy can play a role in most people’s lives.

A list of some of the most common reasons to seek physical therapy includes:

Neck pain and low back pain
Arthritis in one or multiple joints
Fractures and other orthopedic conditions
Bowel or bladder incontinence
Problems with balance or mobility
Chronic fatigue and weakness
Pre- and post-surgical conditioning and strengthening
Cancer recovery
Fitness and wellness education including weight loss and prevention of osteoporosis
Respiratory problems / poor cardiovascular endurance
Knee, ankle and foot problems
Shoulder, arm, hand and wrist problems, such as carpal tunnel syndrome and shoulder tendonitis
Pre- and post-partum programs
Neuro-rehabilitation, such as post-stroke and spinal cord or head injury
Wound care such as diabetic wounds and non-healing traumatic or post-surgical wounds
